Description Mauser Model 1908 7×57 Mauser DWM German production – Produced in Berlin. C&R Eligible Additional information Weight 9 lbs Dimensions 27 × 10 × 5 in History The Mauser Model 1908 was a series of rifles from the Gewehr 98 pattern rifle. This rifle is very similar to the Gew98 but with a simple tangent leaf sight and a longer upper hand-guard, a carbine variant was also available. The carbine is often confused for the Czech 1908/34 (VZ12/22) but there is a German 1908/34 variant carbine that is made with Brazilian sourced wood for the stock. Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and Mauser were the original producers of this firearm and would begin exporting rifles to South American nations like Uruguay and most famously Brazil would adopt these rifles. Brazilian War Material Industry (IMBEL) would produce upgraded versions of this rifle until they were replaced by the FN FAL. When the Brazilians got rid of their rifles they sent many surplus units to the Dominican Republic. These models are distinct because the Brazilian markings would be replaced with Dominican markings and the desginated model 1953. When the US intervened in the Dominican Civil War many of these rifles were preferred over the M16 rifle due to the cartridge having better performance over 5.56×45 NATO at long ranges. Fabrica de Itajuba or IMBEL would continue to produce some M1949 and M954 carbine variants for the Brazilian armed forces. The most recent conflict that used these rifles was the Araguaia Guerilla War in which rebels acquired these rifles in 7.62 NATO from the state police of Para. The model 1949 a short 08/34 variant would be chambered in .30-06 Springfield and the M954 was distinguishable with a threaded muzzle for flash suppressors and grenade launchers. The Model 968 would be chambered in 7.62×51 NATO Condition Stock, Receiver, magazine well, barrel match. All other parts are different serial numbers (Non Matched) The condition of this rifle is fair. The rifle is in quite nice shape for its age and considering it was used in Brazil. The wood stock is the original stock and is intact and retains much of its finish. We note some standard wear from use and transportation. Noted some wood chiped away at the side screw that is near the receiver (see photos) there is also some damage on the wood near the grip. It is a gouge not a crack. Less than 50% bluing intact and the gun appears to have a nice patina. Some surface rust present throughout the metal parts. Bore is a 2/5. We noted nice rifling throughout the bore but the bore is dark and there is pitting present. Middle barrel band retainer is missing. Sling Swivel on stock is missing. Markings Brazilian Star Crest MOD.1908 Eagle over N – Proof Munich House Proof 781 B – Bolt & Receiver (B) – Receiver W – Barrel band and front sight PP – Bolt   Star cartouche on stock – 5 pointed – Brazilian
